Papa'nın İznik'i ziyaret edeceğini açıklamasının ardından tarih ve turizm kenti İznik'e ard arda önemli ziyaretler gerçekleşiyor. Papa Francis'in varisi olarak adlandırılan ve Vatikan Devlet Sekreterliği'nde Papa'nın resmi seyahatlerini denetleyen Kardinal George Jacob Koovakad, İznik'e resmi ziyarette bulundu. İznik Kaymakamı Arif Karaman ve Belediye Başkanı Kağan Mehmet Usta tarafından karşılanan Koovad, yanında bulunan heyet ile birlikte Papa'nın resmi ayin yapacağı İznik gölünde bulunan bazilikayı ziyaret etti.
